God blessed them, saying: "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth." God also said: "See I give you every seed-bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food..." Genesis 1:28-30

This passage in the Bible is the reason I became a tree hugging, eco-friendly, hippie from Mississippi. God gave us many gifts including fish, birds, animals, plants, and trees. It is our responsibility to take care of them. Otherwise they won't exist.

Now I know that it is not easy to change. I'm still in the process of changing my life style. So I suggest choosing a few things from the list and giving them a try.

1) have your car maintained and inspected regularly and check your tire pressure
2) have your house inspected for air leaks, water leaks, etc
3) change your air filter in your home
4) use a low-water use toilet, sink, and shower head
5) buy in bulk
6) use cloth bags for groceries or reuse plastic bags
7) carpool, bike, walk, or use public transit and plan errands
8) switch to cfl bulbs
9) use energy star appliances
10) unplug unused electronics
11) turn off the lights when leaving a room
12) take shorter showers and reduce number of baths
13) buy locally grown groceries or grow your own
14) wash clothes in cold water and hang outside to dry
15) use biodegradable cleaning products
16) get your furnace cleaned yearly
17) install and programmable thermostat and raise or lower temps
18) close your fridge and freezer doors when not in use
19) use appropriate temps for fridge and freezer
20) water lawn at night
21) buy organic and use organic
22) turn off water when not in use
23) soak dishes
24) reduce amount of meat you eat
25) buy a hybrid car
26) don't use aerosols that have halocarbons
27) sign-up to have junk mail not come to your house or office
28) go to paper-less bills and pay them online
29) down size your home (why do we need all that stuff anyway)
30) only run full loads of dishes and clothes

38) buy recycled products

39) donate gently used clothing or repurpose it

41) use handkerchiefs instead of tissues, rags instead of paper towels, cloth toilet "Paper" instead of the other stuff (or get a spray attachment for your toilet)

43) use cloth diapers
44) use reusable containers for storage of food
45) use a reusable water bottle
46) Start a compost pile
47) use eco-friendly products when remodeling and try to reuse what is existing
48) install solar panels
49) install a solar water heater
50) use natural lighting when indoors
51) use rechargeable batteries
52) get a rain collector and use to water lawn
53) use an artificial Christmas tree or a tree that can be replanted
54) reuse your carved pumpkin from Halloween
55) buy second hand items
